San Angelo State Park is one of the newer state parks, opened in 1995. The park sits on the banks of what once was O.C. Fisher Lake. The lake has been dry the last few years since our most recent visit in July of 24. The lake was completed in 1952 for the purposes of flood control, and to provide a secondary source of drinking water for the city of San Angelo.
The park has many options for camping with numerous camp sites with water and electricity, group sites, primitive sites and even cabins.
the north Concho area even has some camp sites equip with pole tethers or pens to accommodate horses.
with fishing pretty much out of the picture, there are other ways to enjoy the park. You'll find 50 miles of multiuse trails through out the park. There's also a 2 mile kid friendly trail, called the dinosaur trail, that passes fossilized trackways from pre dinosaur creatures from the Permian age.
The park is also home to a small herd of bison, and part of the official Texas state long horn herd.
