Fort Richardson State Park

Historic Fort Richardson State Park, in Jacksboro, is a great park for history buffs, and fisherman alike. The fort was named in honor of Union General israel B. richardson, who served in the Civil War and was active from 1867 to 1878. The fort was the northernmost army post in Texas, and was a strategic outpost during the Indian wars with the Comanche and Kiowa tribes. Today several of the original buildings of what was once the largest  US Army installation still stand, and have been restored to give a glimpse of what life was like for the soldiers stationed here. You can catch one of the tours, offered free with admission, or take a self guided tour on the weekends.

The park offers camping at over 40 RV sites or 11 cabins, which also have rv hook ups in the driveway. The park has 12 miles of trails for hiking, biking, and equestrians. The park has two locations on opposite ends of town, the Historic site, and North Park, connected by the the Lost creek Reservoir State railway. The park also has two lakes, 1 at each location. The Historic site has a small man made pond called quarry lake. a beautiful body of water surrounded by large rock ledges that is stocked with bass, catfish, and trout in the winter months. Over at the North park, Lake Jacksboro offers beautiful views, crystal clear waters with both a swimming area, and a fishing pier. The North park also offers camping with a few water only sites.
