Tongue Extension
The tongue on the Bushwhacker trailer is short. Too short if you ask me. I hired a welder to make it longer, and its been one of the best mods on this trailer.
The longer tongue offers a few benefits.
- The longer tongue moves the axle further back. This reduces tongue weight, and helps the trailer track a lot straighter at highway speeds
- The trailer is much easier to control when backing up. It doesn't walk nearly as bad as it did with the short tongue.
- The tongue back is further back, allowing me to drop my tailgate. This is a huge advantage when trying to unload the bed of my truck when the trailer is connected.
I added about 2ft to the tongue. The welder didn't have an 4" square tubing, so we stacked a couple of 2" square tubing to make 4". He added gussets all the way around to strengthen the new tongue to the A-Frame of the trailer. Then we moved the saftey chains forward so they can reach the truck
I had to extend the 7 pin harness and the emergency brake cable, then hit the new tongue with a couple coats of black spray paint, and a couple coats of clear coat.
